05 Writing

Words that work

I started as a writer and I never stopped being one. Field reporting from rural Myanmar, legal-awareness content for a national justice programme, and a decade of copywriting for consumer brands, clinics and NGOs — in Burmese and English.

Utility outperforms messaging

The best-performing thing we published last quarter had no creative in it at all — a plain list of helpline channels, 113,500 people reached. What that taught me about reach, action, and writing for people in crisis.

Field reporting — Proximity Field Notes

Long-form customer stories for Proximity Designs, a USAID-funded social enterprise serving smallholder farmers. I reported and wrote these, and shot most of the photographs myself — travelling to villages in Shan State, Shwebo and the delta to interview farmers in Burmese and write them up in English.

Published under the organisation's byline, as is standard for institutional field notes — so the credit on the page reads Proximity Designs, not my name.

Writing for a national justice programme

A different register: donor-facing programme writing. Under MyJustice II with the British Council I wrote the public account of LannPya — the legal-awareness app and platform — setting out what it does, how the communications strategy was built around returning users rather than raw reach, and what the numbers showed. Writing that has to satisfy a European Union donor, stay accurate about the law, and still be readable.
